Discernment counseling is ideal for married couples in which one partner is considering divorce, but hasn't fully committed. This is referred to in discernment counseling as the leaning out spouse. In comparison, the other spouse is wondering if couples therapy may be helpful, and remains interested in working on the marriage. This spouse is leaning in. It takes 2 highly motivated partners who are both committed to healing and growing their marriage for optimal couples therapy success. An abrupt separation or divorce creates heightened anxiety and more complex legal and parenting plan resolution. If couples choose the path of separation or divorce while in discernment counseling the sessions offer time and a safe place to discuss and make plans for a more amicable process. Discernment counseling guides couples to self-reflection, clarity, and confidence to make decisions about which future path is best.

The Gottman Method for couples therapy includes a full assessment to identify strengths along with target areas that need improvement. Together we create goals and a treatment plan. Treatment Sessions focus on practical interventions and activities that build skills in the areas of communication, understanding, and conflict resolution. A resource folder is provided during the treatment phase so that couples can easily recall strategies learned during sessions and can practice them. This evidence based model is based on over 40 years of research and clinical practice established by world renown experts John & Julie Gottman.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) has been shown to help clients overcome a range of emotional distress caused by trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, and other sources of pain. I have had the opportunity to provide ART to clients who were sent to me by therapists whom they had been seeing for years. After a session or two of ART these clients returned to their therapists who later contacted me to report that the breakthroughs their clients experienced from ART session(s) were enabling them to make greater progress in their own treatment sessions.

It is not uncommon to hear clients say they feel better, have gained insight, and think differently about their problem after just one ART session. Couples counseling also benefits from ART when clients have past trauma, anger, depression or other areas that are holding them back from relationship success. ART takes place in individual sessions and may be combined with traditional “talk therapy” to help clients process their new feelings and experiences between the ART sessions.
